VAILIMA LAGER
INTRODUCING THE TASTE OF SAMOA
OUR HISTORY
Established in 1978 and owned by Samoa Breweries Limited, the Vailima brand is a family of beers brewed in Samoa and are a beacon of national pride.
Vailima’s German brewing heritage is reflected in its European style beer. When the brewery was established in 1978, it was a joint venture between a German Brewing company called Haase Braurei and the Samoan governnment. Still to this day, German hops are key ingredients in making this premium beer.
The brewery is located in the capital Apia on Upolu in the Samoan Islands and is one of the world’s picture perfect locations with its warm weather, tropical green forests and clear cool waters.
The word Vailima literally means “water in the hand”. Its origins date back to a legend about a couple crossing the mountain range which spans the Samoan island of Upolu. When they finally reached the spot where the Vailima village is now, the man was nearly dying of thirst. Having no other means of fetching water (vai), the woman used her hands (lima) to collect water from the nearby stream, from which her husband’s health was restored.
Vailima also shares a connection to author Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote the adventure classic ‘Treasure Island’. Stevenson may have just found his own treasure island when he purchased the beautiful Vailima Estate in 1890

German ‘Hallertau’ hops are then added to the Kettle just before the end of the boil to deliver a true Bavarian style to this lager.
Using the brewery’s own strain of yeast, Vailima Lager is allowed to ferment for one week at up to 15.5°C to ensure our beer retains maximum flavour
Vailima Lager is then cold matured for up to 2 weeks prior to filtration and packaging.

VAILIMA LAGER
THE ORIGINAL TASTE OF SAMOA
OUR HISTORY
About Samoa Breweries
Samoa Breweries Ltd has been proudly brewing Vailima beer in Samoa since 1978.
Established as a joint venture between German brewer Haase Braurei and the Samoan Government, Samoa Breweries is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Paradise Beverages (Fiji) Limited, a leading beverage manufacturer within the Pacific region.
The brewery is located in the picturesque Samoan capital of Apia. Its German brewing heritage is reflected in the European-style brewing methods, which include the use of German hops as a key ingredient in the Vailima beer range.
Our Brand Story
Vailima beer takes its name from the picturesque nearby village.
The word Vailima literally means ‘water in the hand’. Legend has it that the village draws its name from a legendary tale of a couple crossing the Samoan island of Upolu. Dying of thirst at the spot where the village now stands, the husband is revived when his wife carries water (vai) to him in her hands (lima), so giving the village its name, Vailima.
Vailima beer also shares the same name as the famous Vailima Estate which was originally owned by the globally-renowned author, Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote the adventure classic ‘Treasure Island’. Stevenson may have just found his own treasure island spending his final years there.

German ‘Hallertau’ hops are then added to the kettle just before the end of the boil to deliver a true Bavarian style.
Using the brewery’s own strain of yeast, Vailima Lager is allowed to ferment at up to 15.5°C to ensure the beer retains maximum flavour.
Vailima Lager is then cold matured for up to two weeks before filtration and packaging take place.
